Weak bond detection in composites using highly nonlinear solitary waves

Smart Materials and Structures, 2017
We experimentally investigate a diagnostic technique for identifying a weak bond in composites using highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs). We set up a one-dimensional chain of granular crystals, consisting of spherical particles with nonlinear interactions, to generate HNSWs.

Recent advancement on the NDE of structures by means of highly nonlinear solitary waves

SPIE Proceedings, 2012
In this paper, we propose the use of highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs) for the nondestructive evaluation of aluminum lap-joints bonded by high-strength two ton epoxy. A HNSW transducer was used to generate and detect the propagation of incident and reflected HNSWs.

Use of highly nonlinear solitary waves for the assessment of dental implants

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011
This paper presents a noninvasive technique based on the propagation of highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs) to monitor the stability of dental implants. HNSWs are mechanical waves that can form and travel in highly nonlinear systems, such as one-dimensional chains of contacting spherical particles (i.e., granular crystals).

Site-Specific Quality Assessment of Trabecular Bone Using Highly Nonlinear Solitary Waves

2021
We present a numerical study of highly nonlinear solitary wave interaction with adjacent bone microstructures towards the development of a novel diagnostic scheme for site-specific bone quality assessment. High-resolution finite-element models of the trabecular bone microstructures in the femoral head are generated using a topology optimization-based ...

Experimental parametric analysis of an energy harvester based on highly nonlinear solitary waves

Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, 2016
We investigate experimentally five different designs of an energy harvester based on mechanical vibration and highly nonlinear solitary waves. The harvester consists of a metamaterial formed by granular chains, an oscillator that taps the metamaterial, a solid in contact with the metamaterial, and a piezoelectric element glued to the solid. The overall
