The interaction of highly nonlinear solitary waves and viscoelastic half-space
2017 Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves, and Device Applications (SPAWDA), 2017The method of nondestructive testing (NDT) using the coupling of highly nonlinear solitary waves in one-dimensional particle chains and structures is a new research hotspot which is gradually improved. Based on properties of solitary wave, we investigate the coupling mechanism between highly nonlinear solitary waves and viscoelastic half-space and ...

Site-Specific Quality Assessment of Trabecular Bone Using Highly Nonlinear Solitary Waves
2021We present a numerical study of highly nonlinear solitary wave interaction with adjacent bone microstructures towards the development of a novel diagnostic scheme for site-specific bone quality assessment. High-resolution finite-element models of the trabecular bone microstructures in the femoral head are generated using a topology optimization-based ...

Health Monitoring of Structural and Biological Systems XIII, 2019
This article presents a nondestructive evaluation (NDE) method to infer the axial stress in thick beams with the aim to extent the methodology to continuous welded rails. The method relies on the propagation of highly nonlinear solitary waves generated at one end of a chain of spherical particles in contact with the beam to be evaluated.

Smart Materials and Structures, 2011
We propose a new biomedical sensing technique based on highly nonlinear solitary waves to assess orthopaedic implant stability in a nondestructive and efficient manner. We assemble a granular crystal actuator consisting of a one-dimensional tightly packed array of spherical particles, to generate acoustic solitary waves.

Use of highly nonlinear solitary waves for the assessment of dental implants
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011This paper presents a noninvasive technique based on the propagation of highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs) to monitor the stability of dental implants. HNSWs are mechanical waves that can form and travel in highly nonlinear systems, such as one-dimensional chains of contacting spherical particles (i.e., granular crystals).
