이 연구는 이질적 존재에서 이국적 존재로 변모한 사람들, 즉 한 국민국가 내부의 소수종족이 관광상품화되면서 나타나는 여러 현상들에 관한 연구이다. 구체적으로는 태국 북부 지역의 고산족이 상품화되는 사례를 통해 태국 사회 의 고산족 관리 방식의 변화, 고산족상품화 진행 양상, 상품화가 고산족의 종족 성에 미친 영향, 고산족의 상품화 과정에서 상품인 소수종족들이 주체가 되지 못하고 배제되는 양상에 대해 살펴보았다.
