Hindlimb suspension suppresses muscle growth and satellite cell proliferation

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1989
The effects of long-term hindlimb unweighting by tail suspension on postnatal growth of 20-day rat extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus muscles were studied. Morphological assay indicated that radial growth of soleus myofibers was completely inhibited between 3 and 10 days of suspension and reduced thereafter, leading to a severe attenuation ...

Effect of a 14-day hindlimb suspension on β-adrenoreceptors in rats

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Pharmacology, Toxicology and Endocrinology, 1999
Exposure to long-term simulated microgravity exhibits reduced sympathetic nervous system activity. This study tested the hypothesis that the hypersensitivity of adrenoreceptors would explain partly many other features of the hemodynamic consequences of return from space.

Changes in rat atrial ANF granules induced by hindlimb suspension

Regulatory Peptides, 1994
It is well known that the heart releases a factor called ANF (atrial natriuretic factor) or ANP (atrial natriuretic peptide) capable of inducing rapid diuretic and natriuretic actions. This factor is stored in secretory granules mainly located in myocytes in both atria.

Myosin and troponin changes in rat soleus muscle after hindlimb suspension

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1993
We examined the myosin heavy-chain (MHC), troponin T (TnT), and troponin I (TnI) isoform composition in the rat soleus muscle after 21 days of hindlimb suspension using electrophoretic and immunoblotting analysis with specific monoclonal antibodies. The suspended soleus showed a shift in the MHC isoform distribution with a marked increase (from 1.0 to

Lack of exercise, via hindlimb suspension, impedes endogenous neurogenesis

Neuroscience, 2007
Bedridden patients who receive good physical rehabilitation are able to exhibit clinical improvement. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that exercise increases endogenous neurogenesis and may even protect against central nervous system (CNS) disorders.

Experimental Model of HindLimb Suspension-Induced Skeletal Muscle Atrophy in Rodents.

Methods in molecular biology, 2018
Due to the difficulty of performing research protocols that reproduce human skeletal muscle disuse conditions, an experimental animal model of "hindlimb suspension" (or hindlimb unloading) was developed. This method was created in the 1970s and utilizes rats and mice to mimic space flight and bed rest in humans.

Changes in stiffness induced by hindlimb suspension in rat soleus muscle

Pflgers Archiv European Journal of Physiology, 1995
Soleus muscle atrophy was induced by hind-limb suspension of rats for 3 weeks with the intention of inducing a relative increase in the percentage of fast-twitch fibres and assessing modifications in muscle stiffness. A method of dual controlled releases was used to obtain tension/extension curves and force/velocity relationships characterizing the ...

Rat small mesenteric artery function after hindlimb suspension

Journal of Applied Physiology, 2000
To determine whether simulated microgravity in rats is associated with vascular dysfunction, we measured responses of isolated, pressurized mesenteric resistance artery segments (157- to 388-μm ID) to vasoconstrictors, pressure, and shear stress after 28-day hindlimb suspension (HS).

Whole body and muscle respiratory capacity with dobutamine and hindlimb suspension

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1991
The effects of repeated injections of dobutamine, a synthetic catecholamine, were studied in control and tail-suspended rats to determine whether this drug could improve the metabolic response to unweighting. Dobutamine prevented the decrease in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) induced by hindlimb suspension.

Effect of hindlimb suspension simulation of microgravity on in vitro immunological responses*1

Experimental Cell Research, 1991
The effects of microgravity on the immune system are largely unknown, but understanding such effects becomes increasingly important as space exploration continues and mission duration increases. Reductions in postflight human T cell reactivity to mitogens is well documented.
