Interaction of hyperthyroidism and hindlimb suspension on skeletal myosin heavy chain expression

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1998
We examined the novel interaction of hyperthyroidism and hindlimb suspension on the pattern of myosin heavy chain (MHC) expression (mRNA and protein) in skeletal muscles. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to four groups: 1) normal control (Con); 2) thyroid hormone treated [150 μg 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3) ⋅ kg−1⋅ day−1] (T3); 3) hindlimb ...

Atrophy and growth failure of rat hindlimb muscles in tail-cast suspension

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1984
Atrophy and growth failure of muscle in a tail-cast suspension model were evaluated in hindlimbs of female Sprague-Dawley rats. Based on measurements of food consumption, animal growth rate, urinary excretion of urea and ammonia, and muscle size, 6 days seemed to be the optimum duration of suspension for studying muscle unloading.

Effect of Hindlimb Suspension and Clenbuterol Treatment on Polyamine Levels in Skeletal Muscle

Pharmacology, 2002
Polyamines are unbiquitous, naturally occurring small aliphatic, polycationic, endogenous compounds. They are involved in many cellular processes and may serve as secondary or tertiary messengers to hormonal regulation. The relationship of polyamines and skeletal muscle mass of adductor longus, extensor digitorum longus, and gastrocnemius under ...

Muscle-Specific Effects of Hindlimb Suspension and Clenbuterol in Mature Male Rats

Cells Tissues Organs, 2002
Anabolic agents are useful tools for probing the mechanisms by which muscle fibers perceive and respond to disuse. β2-Adrenergic agonists exert protective, and/or reparative, effects on atrophying muscle tissue. The effects of one such agent, clenbuterol (Cb), were examined on muscle mass, total protein content, and myofibrillar ...

Control of myosin heavy chain expression: interaction of hypothyroidism and hindlimb suspension

American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology, 1991
The aim of this study was to contrast competing influences, hypothyroidism and hindlimb suspension, on myosin heavy chain (MHC) expression studied at the protein level and mRNA level. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to either normal control (NC), normal suspended (NS), or hypothyroid (thyroidectomized) control (TC) and suspended (TS) groups ...

Effect of anabolic steroids on skeletal muscle mass during hindlimb suspension

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1987
The efficacy of anabolic steroid treatment [0.3 or 0.9 mg nandrolone decanoate (Deca-Durabolin) per day] was examined in the context of sparing rodent fast-twitch plantaris and slow-twitch soleus muscle weight, sparing subcellular protein, and altering isomyosin expression in response to hindlimb suspension. Female rats were assigned to four groups (7

Adaptation of fibers in fast-twitch muscles of rats to spaceflight and hindlimb suspension

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1992
The adaptation of single fibers in medial gastrocnemius (MG), a fast-twitch extensor, and tibialis anterior (TA), a fast-twitch flexor, was studied after 14 days of spaceflight (COSMOS 2044) or hindlimb suspension. Cross-sectional area (CSA) and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (GPD), and myofibrillar ...

Reflex and muscular adaptations in rat soleus muscle after hindlimb suspension

Journal of Experimental Biology, 1999
ABSTRACT Reflex, mechanical and histochemical adaptations of the soleus muscle following 3 weeks of hindlimb suspension (HS) were measured in the rat. HS transformed the soleus muscle fibre type composition from predominantly slow, type I, to approximately equal proportions of fast, type II and slow fibres.

Respective effects of hindlimb suspension, confinement and spaceflight on myotendinous junction ultrastructure

Acta Astronautica, 1995
This study compares the effects of 14-day confinement and spaceflight with the respective effects of 8, 18 and 29-day hindlimb suspension on rat soleus and plantaris MTJ ultrastructure. Independently of the experimental situation, greater morphological changes were observed in the soleus as compared to the plantaris MTJ.
