Air embolism in hip surgery

Summary The hearts of 49 patients undergoing hip‐replacement surgery were auscultated and the characteristic sounds of air emboli were heard in 15 of them—30% of the total. This finding was confirmed in the later patients by the use of an ultrasonic transducer to detect air emboli.

Regional Anesthesia in Hip Surgery

Orgaran in Hip Fracture Surgery

Pathophysiology of Haemostasis and Thrombosis, 1992
Two studies evaluating the effect of Orgaran prophylaxis on the incidence of postoperative thrombosis in hip fracture surgery are reported. In one Scandinavian study, dextran was used in the comparative group, and in the US study, warfarin was used.

Other hip surgery

This is sometimes performed to provide pain relief in the younger patient. One type is the McMurray osteotomy, in which the femur is surgically divided between the greater and lesser trochanters and the shaft of the femur displaced medially, followed by internal fixation with a nail and plate. This redistributes the weightbearing stresses on the joint.
