Existing hip joint disease is associated with an increased incidence of hip fracture in adults: A retrospective survey of 9710 individuals from a single center

open access: yesHeliyon
Objective: In hip disease patients, pain and movement restrictions might cause changes in bone strength and increase the likelihood of falls, finally leading to hip fracture.

Is decreasing mortality in total hip and knee arthroplasty patients dependent on patients’ comorbidity?: A Danish nationwide, population-based cohort study (1996–2013)

open access: yesActa Orthopaedica, 2017
Background and purpose — Mortality after primary total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA and TKA) has declined, and the proportion of THA and TKA patients with comorbid conditions has increased.

Characterization of an Injectable Poly(vinyl alcohol)‐gelatin Hydrogel for Growth Factor Delivery in an Orthopedic Application

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces photo‐crosslinkable tyraminated poly(vinyl alcohol)‐gelatin (PVA‐GT) hydrogels as tunable injectable platforms for tissue engineering and growth factor delivery applications. This schematic illustrates the two developed hydrogel formulations and the experimental workflow used to evaluate their physico‐chemical properties in vitro ...

Assessment of Patients with a DePuy ASR Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement: Results of Applying the Guidelines of the Spanish Society of Hip Surgery in a Tertiary Referral Hospital

open access: yesAdvances in Orthopedics, 2014
The prognosis associated with the DePuy ASR hip cup is poor and varies according to the series. This implant was withdrawn from use in 2010 and all patients needed to be assessed. We present the results of the assessment of our patients treated with this

Reconstruction of Massive Posterior Nonrepairable Acetabular Labral Tears With Peroneus Brevis Tendon Allograft: Arthroscopy-Assisted Mini-Open Approach

open access: yesArthroscopy Techniques, 2016
Many of the described labral-reconstruction procedures are purely arthroscopic. This approach only allows segmentary reconstructions. For more extensive reconstructions, surgical dislocation of the hip still represents the more suitable approach.

Ti6Al4V‐Bioglass‐Copper Composites for Load‐Bearing Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We have designed and manufactured a novel Ti64‐based composite by adding 45S5 bioglass (BG) and copper (Cu). Adding BG on titanium improves wear resistance and biocompatibility, whereas Cu addition improves mechanical strength while providing inherent lifelong bacterial resistance.

Sculpting the Future of Bone: The Evolution of Absorbable Materials in Orthopedics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review summarizes the current status of polymeric, ceramic, and metallic absorbable materials in orthopedic applications, and highlights several innovative strategies designed to enhance mechanical performance, control degradation, and promote bioactivity. We also discuss the progress and translational potential of absorbable materials in treating
