Hypothyroidism is defined as a decrease in the production of thyroid hormones. There is an ongoing destruction or loss of thyroid tissue by autoimmune processes or by irradiation in primary hypothyroidism. In secondary hypothyroidism, there is insufficient thyroid stimulation by TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone).
