The pliocene species of Hipparion andtheir biostratigraphical meanings
Geobios, 1986Abstract During the Pliocene, the «Hipparion fauna in the Mediterranean area decreased sharply in comparison with the Upper Miocene. Nevertheless, this species can be used to represent the Hipparion biozones in order to compare them with the mammal units. H. gromovae characterizes the Ventian or MN 13 mammal unit; H.

Supraspecific grouping of Old World hipparions (Mammalia, Equidae)
Paläontologische Zeitschrift, 1984Morphological characters useful for supraspecific grouping of hipparionid horses are discussed. On the basis of such characters supraspecific groups are distinguished among Old World hipparions. These are the generaHipparion, Proboscidipparion, andNeohipparion, the latter with the subgeneraNeohipparion andStylohipparion.

Hipparion Datum and Its Chronologic Evidence in the Mediterranean Area
1990For mammalian biochronology in Europe, the immigation of hipparionine equids into the Mediterranean and central European areas constitutes a major event, which characterizes the Aragonian-Vallesian boundary (Fahlbusch, 1976; Ginsburg, 1975). Berggren and van Couvering (1974) popularized this event by introducing the concept of “Hipparion Datum.”
