Phylogeny of Hirsutella species (Ophiocordycipitaceae) from the USA: remedying the paucity of Hirsutella sequence data [PDF]

open access: yesIMA Fungus, 2015
Hirsutella (Ophiocordycipitaceae: Hypocreales) is a genus of insect, mite, and nematode pathogens with an asexual morph, which generally produce a mucilaginous cluster of one or several conidia on phialides that are basally subulate and taper to a fine neck.

Can microbial‐based insecticides replace chemical pesticides in agricultural production?

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 16, Issue 11, Page 2011-2014, November 2023., 2023
Abstract Extensive use of chemical insecticides to control insect pests in agriculture has improved yields and production of high‐quality food products. However, chemical insecticides have been shown to be harmful also to beneficial insects and many other organisms like vertebrates.

An Ustilaginoidea virens glycoside hydrolase 42 protein is an essential virulence factor and elicits plant immunity as a PAMP

open access: yesMolecular Plant Pathology, Volume 24, Issue 11, Page 1414-1429, November 2023., 2023
UvGHF1, as a GH42‐type glycosyl hydrolase secreted by Ustilaginoidea virens, contributes to U. virens virulence, whereas it is recognized by the rice surveillance system to trigger plant immunity. Abstract Rice false smut, caused by the ascomycete fungus Ustilaginoidea virens, which infects rice florets before heading, severely threatens rice grain ...

Anti‐obesity effects exerted by Dioscorea opposita Thunb. polysaccharides in diet‐induced obese mice

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 11, Issue 10, Page 6459-6469, October 2023., 2023
For enhancing the economic value of an edible Dioscorea opposita Thunb., the polysaccharides (DOTPs) were isolated. We found that DOTPs produced significant anti‐obesity effects in diet‐induced obese mice. Thus, DOTPs may be a potential prebiotic agent for the treatment of obesity.

A species‐level phylogenetic framework and infrageneric classification for the genus Maesa (Primulaceae)

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 72, Issue 4, Page 791-810, August 2023., 2023
Abstract The systematization of Maesa, a genus of almost 200 species, has haunted taxonomists for more than a century due to its lack of distinct qualitative characters or discontinuities in quantitative characters for species delimitation. The clarification of phylogenetic relationships in such a problematic genus like Maesa is essential to aid ...

Entomopathogenic Potential of Hirsutella spp. Against Guava Fruit Fly (Bactrocera Zonata): A Step Toward Sustainable Agriculture [PDF]

open access: yesPhytopathogenomics and Disease Control
Guava (psidium gujava L.) belonging to the Myrtaceae family, is an important fruit crop of tropical and subtropical regions. Production of guava is affected by many biotic or abiotic factors. Biotic factors, particularly fruit flies (Diptera), cause

New records of fungal pathogens of invertebrates from endemic pine forests in Mexico [PDF]

open access: yesCheck List, 2022
We report fungal pathogens of invertebrates (FPI) (Entomophthorales, Hypocreales, and Orbiliales) from roots of an endemic Mexican pine, Pinus greggii Engelm. ex Parl., at four primary montane forests using next-generation sequencing.
