Diversity and selective pressures of anticoagulants in three medicinal leeches (Hirudinida: Hirudinidae, Macrobdellidae) [PDF]

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2013
AbstractAlthough medicinal leeches have long been used as treatment for various ailments because of their potent anticoagulation factors, neither the full diversity of salivary components that inhibit coagulation, nor the evolutionary selection acting on them has been thoroughly investigated.

Comparison of body wall histologic structure of two medicinal leeches Hirudo sulukii and Hirudo verbana (Hirudinida: Hirudinidae)

Cell and Tissue Research, 2021
In this study, it was aimed to determine secretory cell types using histochemical properties of secretory cells and epidermis histology in the body wall of two medicinal leech species, Hirudo verbana and Hirudo sulukii. In addition, areas of epidermis epithelial cells, secretory cell types, and secretion areas of secretory cells stained with ...

Arhynchobdellida (Annelida: Oligochaeta: Hirudinida): phylogenetic relationships and evolution

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2004
A remarkable diversity of life history strategies, geographic distributions, and morphological characters provide a rich substrate for investigating the evolutionary relationships of arhynchobdellid leeches. The phylogenetic relationships, using parsimony analysis, of the order Arhynchobdellida were investigated using nuclear 18S and 28S rDNA ...

Hemolymph analyses in medicinal leeches Hirudo verbana and H. sulukii (Hirudinida: Hirudinidae)

The aim of this study was to determine the hemocyte type of medicinal leeches, Hirudo sulukii and H. verbana. It was also determined the fractions of hemolymph proteins in these leech species. According to the analyses, four types of hemocyte (prohemocyte, plasmatocyte, granulocyte, and eleocyte) were detected in two species.
