Benign fibrous histiocytoma is an extremely rare spinal tumor with ten reported cases in the literature. Benign fibrous histiocytoma constitutes a diagnostic challenge because it shares common clinical symptoms, radiological characteristics, and histological features with other benign lesions involving the spine.

The ultrastructure of benign and malignant fibrous histiocytomas

Five benign histiocytomas of varying pattern and three malignant fibrous histiocytomas have been studied ultrastructurally. An essentially biphasic pattern of histiocytes and fibroblasts was present. In addition fibrohistiocytes, myofibroblasts and undifferentiated cells were present in some of the tumours.

Benign fibrous histiocytoma (FH) is a benign neoplasm of a mixture of fibroblastic and histiocytic cells. The tumor occurs most frequently on the skin of the extremities but rarely in deep soft tissues of the head and neck. The diagnosis of benign FH may be clinically difficult, and is frequently confirmed after excision.
