The depth of the deepest historical earthquakes

Pure and Applied Geophysics, 1987
We useP andS times listed in the International Seismological Summary to relocate 23 historical earthquakes (1927–1963) reported as occurring at or below 670 km. In all cases, our relocated hypocenters are shallower than the starting depths; furthermore, all events converge to 691 km or less, with a precision estimated at ±10 km.

Historical Earthquakes, Ms8.0 Wenchuan Earthquake and Its Aftershocks

2010
Current earthquake prediction methods were so far mostly based on recorded historical earthquakes. However, our knowledge of long-term earthquake behaviour is strongly restricted by the rarity of large earthquakes and the short historical and instrumental records of earthquakes, and hence our understanding could be misled by incomplete and unreliable ...

Reevaluation of Historic Earthquakes in Spain

Seismological Research Letters, 2004
In recent years considerable effort has been expended to find new accounts of earthquake effects in Spain. With this information a reevaluation of intensities has been performed. These new data have allowed us to recalculate the seismic hazard maps of Spain which are included in recent seismic codes (Mezcua and Martin, 1993; Rueda and Mezcua, 2001 ...

Value of Historical Records of Earthquakes

Nature, 1971
Modern earthquake catalogues have been found unreliable in reporting earthquakes which occurred before 1900, because of a series of errors perpetuated at second and third hand. A new study of the original records provides significant data relating earthquake activity in the Eastern Mediterranean basin with plate tectonic activity over the past 2,000 ...

Migration of historical earthquakes in California

pure and applied geophysics, 1988
Most large earthquakes of magnitude ≥6.0 in California during 1852–1987 appear to show a southeast-to-northwest tendency of epicenter migration. This finding is consistent with earlier findings ofSavage (1971) for a relatively few large earthquakes along the west coast of North America, and ofWood andAllen (1973) for smaller events along the San ...
