The present outline reviews approaches to competition in morphology across the history of linguistics, from Ancient Indian grammatical doctrines up to present-day morphological theories.

SUMMARY Syntactic and morphological tests demonstrate that bound forms in some disyllabic verbs in Modern Chinese have been diachronically morphologized from independent verbs in Ancient Chinese.
