Brokerage, bridewealth and benefits on a resource frontier in Papua New Guinea

open access: yesThe Australian Journal of Anthropology, EarlyView.
Abstract In this paper, we examine tensions over intermarriage and resource sharing between two groups on a Papua New Guinean resource frontier. These tensions are mediated by a ‘brokerage fix’ led by Febi clan heads responding to financial demands from their Pangia neighbours and sometime affines.

When brokers fail, brokers proliferate! Generational change and the failure of development in remote Papua New Guinea

open access: yesThe Australian Journal of Anthropology, EarlyView.
Abstract Recent efforts to secure development by Febi and Kubo people in Papua New Guinea's Western Province reveal a patterned history of failing brokers, incomplete projects and wasted money. Within this longer trajectory, three overlapping waves of brokerage can be discerned, each emerging in response to the limitations of its predecessors.

War, Trauma and Diasporic Identity in Vyvyane Loh's Breaking the Tongue

open access: yesWorld Englishes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Japan's involvement in the Second World War offers provocative narrative material for authors who write about the cultural politics of race under wartime conditions, such as the internment experience of Japanese Americans in the United States and the mass killings of Chinese (Operation Sook Ching), suspected of anti‐Japanese sentiments in ...

Finite Viscoelastic Modeling of Ice Shelves Using Glen's Flow Law and Depth‐Dependent Material Properties

open access: yesProceedings in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Volume 26, Issue 4, December 2026.
ABSTRACT Ice shelves are floating seaward extensions of glaciers that form where land‐based ice flows into the ocean. Recent observations suggest that their mechanical behavior is suitably described by a viscoelastic Maxwell model, as this framework captures both the instantaneous elastic response and the time‐dependent viscous flow of ice.

Designing for equity: A rapid review of STEM intervention strategies and outcomes for disadvantaged students

open access: yesReview of Education, Volume 14, Issue 3, December 2026.
Abstract Despite significant recent growth in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields, disadvantaged groups continue to face systematic barriers in accessing STEM education opportunities. In response, a wide range of K–12 STEM interventions have emerged to address these inequities.

Forecasting Cascading and Compounding Flood Risk From Earthquake‐Induced Ground Deformation

open access: yesJournal of Flood Risk Management, Volume 19, Issue 4, December 2026.
ABSTRACT Large earthquakes can disrupt river systems and produce abrupt, unforeseen changes in flood risk. Forward modelling of earthquake‐related surface deformation and its influence on inundation extent, depth, and frequency enables pre‐emptive assessment of exposure to this compound hazard.

Sustainable and Seismically Resilient Confined Masonry: Global Progress in Research and Design Practice

open access: yesEarthquake Spectra, Volume 42, Issue 4, November 2026.
Modern confined masonry (CM) construction consists of masonry walls confined by reinforced concrete (RC) tie‐columns and tie‐beams. When built correctly, CM buildings have shown good performance in earthquake's shaking. Even though CM construction has been practised for almost a century in some Latin American countries, its use and standardisation are ...

Influence of Site Amplification Approaches in PSRA: Insights From Five Different Cities

open access: yesEarthquake Spectra, Volume 42, Issue 4, November 2026.
Regional and national seismic hazard models used in probabilistic seismic risk analysis often rely on generalized proxy‐based site terms to account for ground shaking amplification. This can result in coarse representations of site response, which can introduce bias or additional uncertainty in the associated risk results.

CyberShake NZ: Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis in New Zealand Using Physics‐Based Ground‐Motion Simulations

open access: yesEarthquake Spectra, Volume 42, Issue 4, November 2026.
This study presents the computational components and workflow developed to conduct probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) in New Zealand (NZ) using physics‐based ground‐motion simulations, referred to as “CyberShake NZ.” Semi‐automated procedures generate multiple realizations of kinematic rupture models, create rupture‐specific velocity models ...

Application of Linked Stress Release Model to Historical Earthquake Data: Comparison between Two Kinds of Tectonic Seismicity [PDF]

open access: yesPure and Applied Geophysics, 2000
The linked stress release model, incorporating a slow buildup of stress within a seismic region, its stochastic release through earthquakes and transfer between seismic regions, is applied to fit historical data from two typical kinds of seismicity ...
