Historical Seismology in Switzerland: Reflections on Issues and Insights

Environment and History, 2003
Abstract Historical seismology cannot rely on instrumental measurement alone; investigation depends mainly on the evaluation of historical sources. Improving the quality of historical data underlying macroseismic and seismological parameters has been proposed as a desideratum.

The history of seismology and historical seismicity in Algeria: an overview

Mediterranean Geoscience Reviews, 2022
Algeria is one of the most seismically active areas along the Nubia-Eurasia convergent plates boundary. It is well known that the instrumental records of seismic events are incomplete because of inadequate instrumentation and the poor coverage of seismogenic areas from 1900 until the installation in 1992 of the Algerian Telemetered Seismological ...

Historical Overview of Petroleum and Seismology

2019
A brief history of petroleum exploration in the United States from the late 1850’s to the present illustrates the progression of scientific thought and techniques that evolved globally during this period. The first subsurface drilling specifically targeting hydrocarbons is credited to Colonel Edwin L.

Modern seismological reassessment and tsunami simulation of historical Hellenic Arc earthquakes

Tectonophysics, 2012
Abstract Neither large magnitude nor tsunamigenic earthquakes occur frequently in the eastern Mediterranean, hampering comprehensive study of these events and consequential hazards whenever digital data are required. Using analog seismograms, travel-time catalogs, and hydrodynamic simulations, we reassess here four large (M ~ 7) historical ...

Children of a Lesser Seismological God: The 1971 Tuscania (Central Italy) “Historical” Earthquake

Seismological Research Letters, 2020
Abstract The 6 February 1971 Tuscania (central Italy) earthquake belongs to a peculiar family of destructive seismic events that have occurred in an area classified as low-seismic hazard, causing heavy damage and tens of casualties. However, this earthquake took place at the dawn of modern seismology in Italy and is far from being fully ...

A historical summary of Geological Survey of Canada studies of earthquake seismology and geomagnetism

Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, 1993
The solid-earth geophysical sciences of seismology and geomagnetism have roots in Canada that predate the founding of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) in 1842. These sciences matured in the Dominion Observatory, which was formed in 1904, and came to the GSC when it merged with the Earth Physics Branch in 1986.

47 Historical seismology: the long memory of the inhabited world

2002
Historical data provides valuable information about the size and frequency of past earthquakes, thus contributing to the formulation of seismic hazard and risk estimates and the location of active faults—especially where particular geological complications make their identification difficult.
