Timeline Theory: Part 2 — Knowledge Density as a Measure of Historical Proximity

open access: yes
This white paper presents Part 2 of the Timeline Theory, proposing a novel framework for measuring historical proximity not by chronological years but by a society’s cumulative acquisition of modern knowledge. It redefines historical eras through the lens of epistemological density: the volume of modern-age knowledge a civilization possesses.

Machine Learning‐Supported Analysis for Predicting and Visualizing Nonlinear Relationships Between Material Properties in Electroplated Chromium Layers

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study applies machine learning regression to predict chromium layer thickness in decorative trivalent chromium electroplating, using 441 experiments from laboratory‐scale (1L) and pilot‐scale (14L) setups. Tree‐based models, particularly CatBoost, outperformed linear regression by capturing nonlinear parameter interactions (R2$R^2$ up to 0.77 ...

Methodological aspects of critical theories in knowledge organization

open access: yes, 2016
This paper focuses on the methodological configuration of critical theories in the knowledge organization domain. We present these critical theories as a response to the ethical problems that affect particular groups in universal classification systems ...

Rapidly Solidified High‐Strength Invar 36 Prepared by Planar‐Flow Melt Spinning

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The Invar 36 alloy was rapidly solidified using the planar‐flow melt‐spinning technique. Ribbon samples with thicknesses ranging from 20 to 160 mm were produced. As the grain size of the ribbon decreased to sub‐micron levels, the hardness increased by more than 2 times.

Melanin's Role in Balancing Mechanical Strength and Reproductive Output in Environmentally Stressed Fungal Spores

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Melanin content directly controls fungal spore mechanical properties, with pigmented spores achieving rupture forces two orders of magnitude higher than hyaline spores. Environmental stress drives this quantity‐quality tradeoff; stressed species invest energy in melanin‐reinforced, mechanically superior thick‐walled, super‐hydrophobic spores, while ...
