Evolutionary history of the Pelasgus minnows (Teleostei: Leuciscidae), an ancient endemic genus from the Balkan Peninsula

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2021
The Balkans are one of the European biodiversity hotspots, hosting outstandingly rich, yet threatened, flora and fauna. This region hosts one of the richest endemic freshwater ichthyofauna in Europe, including several genera occurring exclusively here.

Morphological and molecular evidence for a new shrimp species, Atyaephyra vladoi sp. nov. (Decapoda, Atyidae) in the ancient Skadar Lake system, Balkan Peninsula – its evolutionary relationships and demographic history

Zoologischer Anzeiger, 2018
Abstract The Balkan Lake Skadar used to be recognized as potentially ancient. Recent studies revealed that, although the present lake is of post-Pleistocene origin, its hydrological system is of at least Pliocene origin. The basin of this lake is characterized by rich biodiversity and high endemism, particularly in the local spring areas.

Distinct evolutionary histories of lowland biota on Italian and Balkan peninsulas revealed by the phylogeography of Arundo plinii (Poaceae)

Journal of Biogeography, 2014
AbstractAimAlthough recognized as hotspots of biodiversity, Mediterranean peninsulas have been poorly studied with regard to the evolutionary legacy of Quaternary environmental changes for endemic lowland biota. Using the phylogeography of the lowland Arundo plinii Turra (Poaceae), we evaluated two hypotheses regarding the genetic structure of southern

Interspecific differences in early life‐history traits in crested newts (Triturus cristatussuperspecies, Caudata, Salamandridae) from the Balkan Peninsula

Journal of Natural History, 2009
We studied intraspecific and interspecific variations of early life‐history traits for four crested newt species with different habitat preferences. Although we found considerable variation in size and growth rate between offspring of conspecific females, the species effect appeared to be much more pronounced.
