In the Middle Ages, Italy played host to an Islamic presence that left a lasting impact. For nearly five centuries, from 827 to 1300, Islam’s presence in Sicily and other parts of the Mezzogiorno1 enabled Italy to play a central role in a Mediterranean society endowed with considerable ethnic and religious diversity.
