Public Electricity Supply in Portuguese Guinea, 1930-1974

open access: yesHoST
Guinea-Bissau has a chronically underperforming electricity sector that fails to provide most of the population outside of the capital, Bissau, with access to electricity – nowadays considered a basic human need.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Alographia dos álkalis... de Frei Conceição Veloso: um manual de química industrial para produção da potassa no Brasil colonial The production of potash from plants in colonial Brazil as described in fray Conceição Veloso's Alographia dos alkalis...

open access: yesQuímica Nova, 2008
Potassium carbonate, or potash, was the most important industrial chemical of the 18th century. It was essential for producing glass, soap, saltpeter, dyes, several drugs, and also used for bleaching linens, paper, and sugar.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Making the History of Computing. The History of Computing in the History of Technology and the History of Mathematics [PDF]

open access: yesRevue de Synthèse, 2018
Abstract A history of writing the history of computing is presented in its relationship to the history of mathematics. As with many historiographies, the initial history of computing was very much an internalistic history. In the late 1970s, the field became more serious and started looking at the histories of mathematics and technology for ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

A geopolitics of the diaspora of British engineers in South America in the first half of the 20th century: the cases of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers centre in Argentina

open access: yesActa Polytechnica
The circulation of British engineers in South America during the first half of the twentieth century is a barely explored phenomenon that should be studied in the basis of methodologies that articulate the different elements involved, with the aim of ...

The History of Science in Latin America in its own terms

open access: yesRevista Portuguesa de História, 2020
This article conducts a comparative analysis of two journals: Quipu, created in 1984 by the Latin American Society for the History of Sciences and Technology in Mexico, published until 1994 and shortly relived between 1999 and 2000, and the Brazilian ...
