Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may be complicated by psoriasis and/or an inflammatory arthritis. The clinical features of the arthritis are variable, and may resemble psoriatic arthritis or Reiter’s syndrome (1,2). The fact that both psoriasis and Reiter’s syndrome may present for the first time or be exacerbated by HIV infection

Essential facts [Figure: see text] HIV is a virus that weakens the immune system and leaves people less able to fight infection. According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), an estimated 98,400 people were living with HIV in the UK in 2012, but one in five of them did not know they were carrying the virus.

Three quarters of individuals infected with HIV are in their reproductive years and can expect an almost normal life expectancy under antiretroviral treatment. Many of them want to have a child and reproductive counselling and care can offer a sharp reduction in both sexual and vertical transmission rates. Most couples with HIV are formed by an infected

Since the initial description of HIV and AIDS, monumental efforts have been made both in the developed and developing countries to devise strategies and medications to control the disease. The advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy has now meant that the diagnosis of HIV is no longer a life-sentence and compliant patients with HIV can expect ...

We empirically investigate the effect of tolerance for gays on the spread of HIV in the United States. Using a state-level panel dataset spanning the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, we find that tolerance is negatively associated with the HIV rate. We then investigate the causal mechanisms potentially underlying this relationship.

The epidemiology of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in children is characterized by a double scenario. In countries where highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is available, the pattern of HIV infection is evolving into a chronic disease, whose control strictly depends on patients’ adherence to treatment.

In their Perspective “HIV: experiencing the pressures of modern life,” D. Nolan et al. depict the complex interaction of this pathogen with us humans as its host (4 Mar., p. [1422][1]). The authors conclude that HIV is highly adaptable.

Renal consequences of HIV and HIV therapy
Current Opinion in HIV and AIDS, 2007To highlight the latest data documenting new concerns about renal function in HIV-infected patients, with regard to acute renal failure with its known burden of mortality and prolonged hospitalization, antiretroviral medication errors potentially enhancing the risk of the emergence of viral resistance, outcome of HIV dialysis patients, and renal ...

This review points out unmet medical needs and open research questions of older adults living with HIV. Starting from the definition of aging in HIV, it explores the mosaic of this condition at epidemiological, pathophysiological, and clinical level. Antiretroviral management and diverse models of care are critically discussed.Aging cohorts suggest HIV
