There are three patterns of HIV infection and AIDS. In industrial countries infection is between homosexual and bisexual males and intravenous drug users. Relatively few women are infected but the numbers are increasing. In sub-Saharan Africa the infection is heterosexual. More women are infected. AIDS incidence in other countries is low.
