Renal consequences of HIV and HIV therapy
Current Opinion in HIV and AIDS, 2007To highlight the latest data documenting new concerns about renal function in HIV-infected patients, with regard to acute renal failure with its known burden of mortality and prolonged hospitalization, antiretroviral medication errors potentially enhancing the risk of the emergence of viral resistance, outcome of HIV dialysis patients, and renal ...

Since the initial description of HIV and AIDS, monumental efforts have been made both in the developed and developing countries to devise strategies and medications to control the disease. The advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy has now meant that the diagnosis of HIV is no longer a life-sentence and compliant patients with HIV can expect ...

The epidemiology of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in children is characterized by a double scenario. In countries where highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is available, the pattern of HIV infection is evolving into a chronic disease, whose control strictly depends on patients’ adherence to treatment.

We empirically investigate the effect of tolerance for gays on the spread of HIV in the United States. Using a state-level panel dataset spanning the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, we find that tolerance is negatively associated with the HIV rate. We then investigate the causal mechanisms potentially underlying this relationship.

In their Perspective “HIV: experiencing the pressures of modern life,” D. Nolan et al. depict the complex interaction of this pathogen with us humans as its host (4 Mar., p. [1422][1]). The authors conclude that HIV is highly adaptable.

Immunogenetics of HIV and HIV associated tuberculosis
Tuberculosis, 2012Tuberculosis (TB) is the frequent major opportunistic infection in HIV-infected patients, and is the leading cause of mortality among HIV-infected patients. Genetic susceptibility to TB in HIV negative subjects is well documented. Since coinfections can influence the way in which immune system respond to different pathogens, genetic susceptibility to ...

There are three patterns of HIV infection and AIDS. In industrial countries infection is between homosexual and bisexual males and intravenous drug users. Relatively few women are infected but the numbers are increasing. In sub-Saharan Africa the infection is heterosexual. More women are infected. AIDS incidence in other countries is low.

Current HIV/AIDS Reports, 2019
This review points out unmet medical needs and open research questions of older adults living with HIV. Starting from the definition of aging in HIV, it explores the mosaic of this condition at epidemiological, pathophysiological, and clinical level. Antiretroviral management and diverse models of care are critically discussed.Aging cohorts suggest HIV

Evidence suggests that CD8+ T lymphocytes are involved in the control of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in vivo, either by cytolytic mechanisms or by the release of HIV-suppressive factors (HIV-SF). The chemokines RANTES, MIP-1α, and MIP-1β
