The Hockney thesis and the history of optical projection

Frontiers in Optics 2004/Laser Science XXII/Diffractive Optics and Micro-Optics/Optical Fabrication and Testing, 2004
David Hockney's recent book Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters, argues that 15th century painters employed optical devices to achieve realistic portraiture. A reexamination of the history of optical projection techniques raises problems for Hockney's thesis.

An application of Hockney's method for solving Poisson's equation

Proceedings of the May 5-7, 1970, spring joint computer conference on - AFIPS '70 (Spring), 1970
The classical techniques of separation of variables and eigenfunction expansions apply to a wide variety of boundary value problems in partial differential equations. Analogous procedures exist for certain partial difference equations that arise from discretization of the differential equations.
