Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a curable malignancy which shows a bimodal curve in incidence in economically developed countries; there is a putative association with Epstein-Barr virus. The WHO 2008 classification schema recognises two histological types of HL: the nodular lymphocyte predominant and the "classic" HL.

1980Previous controversy as to the nature of this condition is still reflected in its name, but nowadays, it is widely accepted as a neoplastic disorder. However, the underlying nature of the peculiar, proliferating cells, the classical Reed-Sternberg cells and their variants, remains uncertain.

Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
2014Hodgkin’s lymphoma was named after Thomas Hodgkin, who first described abnormalities in the lymph system in 1832. It accounts for 5 % of cancers in the pediatric age group. Overall, it is more common in males, except for the nodular sclerosis variant, which is slightly more common in females.

Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.
Cancer surveys, 1995Incidence of HD varies from about 0.5 per 100,000 person-years in parts of Asia to over 3 in parts of North America. In recent decades, many registries have reported slightly declining age adjusted incidence among men and women. Some lymphomas previously diagnosed as HD now would be classified as NHL, but this shift does not explain all of the decline.
