24 million years of pollination interaction between European linden flowers and bumble bees

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 4, Page 2111-2127, November 2025.
Summary Pollination is the most common insect–plant mutualism, binding them in a co‐evolutionary framework. Historic evidence of this interaction can be partly inferred from time‐calibrated molecular phylogenies of plant and insect lineages or directly from fossils.

Toward understanding apoplastic freezing under negative pressure

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 3, Page 1245-1254, November 2025.
Summary The impact of negative liquid pressure on the freezing of xylem sap is a unique scientific problem. Equilibrium thermodynamics would suggest that, due to the density anomaly of ice, sap under tension should freeze at higher temperatures than under positive pressure.

Tissue humidity and pH as important species traits regulating tree methane emissions in floodplain wetland forests

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 4, Page 1713-1727, November 2025.
Summary Despite the increasing number of studies investigating tree methane fluxes, the relationships between tree methane fluxes and species traits remain mostly unexplored. We measured leaf and stem methane fluxes of five tree species (Acer saccharinum, Fraxinus nigra, Ulmus americana, Salix nigra, and Populus spp.) in the floodplain of Lake St ...

Convergent losses of arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis in carnivorous plants

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 4, Page 2040-2051, November 2025.
Summary Most land plants form the ancient arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis, while carnivory is a younger trait that evolved in several angiosperm orders. The two biotic interactions similarly help plants acquire mineral nutrients, raising the question of whether they can coexist.

Arabidopsis root defense barriers support beneficial interactions with rhizobacterium Pseudomonas simiae WCS417

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 4, Page 2021-2039, November 2025.
Summary Plant roots interact with pathogenic and beneficial microbes in the soil. While root defense barriers block pathogens, their roles in facilitating beneficial plant–microbe associations are understudied. Here, we examined the impact of specific root defense barriers on the well‐known beneficial association between Arabidopsis thaliana and the ...
