Hollow Cathode Discharge Devices
1970Many types of devices have been used as fine-line sources for spectroscopic investigation. Arcs, Geissler tubes, radio-frequency electrodeless discharge tubes, high pressure discharge devices, atomic beams and hollow cathode devices have all been used to study hyperfine line structure. However, no other source has been used as extensively as the hollow

Hollow cathodes for arcjet thrusters
19th International Electric Propulsion Conference, 1987In an attempt to prevent exterior spot emission, hollow cathode bodies and orifice plates were constructed from boron nitride which is an electrical insulator, but the orifice plates melted and/or eroded at high interelectrode pressures. The most suitable hollow cathodes tested included a refractory metal orifice plate in a boron nitride body, with the

Theory of the hollow cathode arc
Journal of Applied Physics, 1978A theory of the hollow cathode arc is given which explains the physical mechanisms of operation of these discharges. The following basic phenomena are studied: the gas flow inside the cathode; the formation of the internal plasma column by ionization of the neutral gas by the primary electrons emitted by the cathode, which are accelerated in the ...

Resonant Cavity Hollow Cathode
41st AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2005The design and operation of a microwave plasma electron source in the form of a resonant cavity are described. Current-voltage characteristics recorded with a flat plate anode are presented and compared to those obtained with a thermionic hollow cathode.

Hollow cathode chemical modelling [PDF]
In this paper the state of hollow cathode life time modelling at the University of Southampton will be reported. Two models have been developed: one for BaO depletion from the hollow cathode insert and another for low work function compounds deposition and desorption.
