Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry: Fundamental Principles, Diverse Applications, and the Latest Technological Frontiers

open access: yesMass Spectrometry Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The review examines the evolution of chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CI‐MS), a technique developed in 1966 by Field and Munson. CI is a soft‐ionization method that produces more intense molecular ions with less fragmentation than electron ionization (EI).

Physical Processes in Hollow Cathodes

AIAA Journal, 1976
Hollow cathodes with cavity diameters of 1.9 cm have been operated in an MPD arc configuration at discharge currents from 0.25 kA to 30 kA. Current and potential distributions, measured with probes in the cathode cavity, show that a spontaneous mode of hollow cathode operation, wherein the current distribution penetrates upstream into the cavity, has ...

Hollow Cathode Discharge with Thermionic Cathodes

Journal of Applied Physics, 1971
The electrical and visual characteristics of a dc hollow cathode discharge with indirectly heated thermionic cathodes were obtained in argon at a few Torr. Two facing planar cathodes of variable separation form the hollow cathode geometry. A hollow cathode effect was observed in the ``ball-of-fire'' mode and in the ``low-voltage arc'' mode. The results
