The novel opens in San Diego in the summer of 2008 and closes in eastern Canada early in the following summer. David and Harry, a father and son, are the principal characters.

This chapter explores the basic structure of Christian teaching about the Holy Spirit—pneumatology. The chapter considers, first, the biblical presentation of the Spirit and then explores the decisive contribution of theological debates in the fourth century ad. The contributions of the Cappadocian fathers and St Augustine of Hippo are considered.
