Summary This study presents a technological analysis of 18 old patinated scrapers and spalls, mostly of Quina technology, that were recycled into new scrapers of the same type at the Late Lower Palaeolithic site of Qesem Cave, Israel (420–200 kyr). Recycling scrapers into the same Quina and demi‐Quina types offers a rare, controlled opportunity to ...

Structural, functional, and evolutionary links between two behavioral by‐products (i.e., stone play and female‐to‐female mounting—FFM) and their putative corresponding behavioral adaptations (i.e., stone tool use and female‐to‐male mounting—FMM) in Balinese long‐tailed macaques and Japanese macaques.

No More Sneaking Around: The Changing Terminology of Orangutan Male Reproductive Strategies
ABSTRACT Objectives Orangutans exhibit male bimaturism, characterized by pronounced variation among adult males. Early research framed this variation as age‐based morphs with two alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs), contrasting “sneak and rape” subadults with “consort and combat” adults.

ABSTRACT Objectives The grandmother hypothesis proposes that ancestral women ceased reproduction midlife to instead provision their grandchildren. An alternative “two‐sex” account proposes that the high energetic burden of caring for slow‐developing offspring was met with biparental investment.

ABSTRACT Persistent enrichment of Neanderthal collagen δ15N relative to local herbivore baselines has long stimulated debate regarding Neanderthal trophic ecology. A recent proposal suggests that the consumption of fly larvae from decomposing carcasses may have contributed to this enrichment.

ABSTRACT Objectives Female bonobos (Pan paniscus) resume sexual swellings in the early postpartum stage and exhibit prolonged sexual receptivity. Despite the simultaneous availability of receptive females, genetic evidence reveals a pronounced male reproductive skew in this species.

The Interrelation Among Allometry, Phylogeny, and Diet in the Molar Cervix
ABSTRACT Objectives Root surface morphology has been used to examine functional signals related to diet and taxonomic affinities in primates with varying degrees of success. The aim of this study is to determine if the use of the functionally significant root cervix can enhance our understanding of these relationships in catarrhines.

Relatively open vegetation landscapes promoted early Pleistocene hominin evolution
Vegetation structure and landscape openness are key ecological factors influencing human behavioural and cultural adaptation strategies. However, there is ongoing debate and lack of quantitative assessment about which vegetation landscape and openness ...

The Effects of Biome Stability During the Quaternary on Plant Diversity
We used machine learning to reconstruct global biome changes over the last 2.6 million years, revealing that tropical forests, deserts, and temperate forests were relatively stable, whereas northern Europe and North America experienced frequent biome shifts due to ice sheet expansions.

Retaining Models of Human Evolution After Repeated Falsifications—Why?
Two 19th century paradigms of human evolution emerged: Humans are subdivided into isolated populations in an evolutionary tree, versus human populations interbreed (gene flow) with no isolates. The tree model has been rejected whenever tested since the 1970's, whereas gene flow consistently fits.
