Information production in homogeneous isotropic turbulence [PDF]
We study the Reynolds number scaling of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and attractor dimension for three dimensional homogeneous isotropic turbulence through the use of direct numerical simulation. To do so, we obtain Lyapunov spectra for a range of different Reynolds numbers by following the divergence of a large number of orthogonal fluid trajectories.

Chaos and Predictability of Homogeneous-Isotropic Turbulence [PDF]
We study the chaoticity and the predictability of a turbulent flow on the basis of high-resolution direct numerical simulations at different Reynolds numbers. We find that the Lyapunov exponent of turbulence, which measures the exponential separation of two initially close solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, grows with the Reynolds number of the ...

Developing homogeneous isotropic turbulence [PDF]
We investigate the self-similar evolution of the transient energy spectrum which precedes the establishment of the Kolmogorov spectrum in homogeneous isotropic turbulence in three dimensions using the EDQNM closure model. The transient evolution exhibits self-similarity of the second kind and has a non-trivial dynamical scaling exponent which results ...

Scaling of Lyapunov exponents in homogeneous isotropic turbulence [PDF]
Lyapunov exponents measure the average exponential growth rate of typical linear perturbations in a chaotic system, and the inverse of the largest exponent is a measure of the time horizon over which the evolution of the system can be predicted. Here, Lyapunov exponents are determined in forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence for a range of Reynolds ...

Thermal fluctuations in the dissipation range of homogeneous isotropic turbulence [PDF]
Using fluctuating hydrodynamics we investigate the effect of thermal fluctuations in the dissipation range of homogeneous isotropic turbulence. Simulations confirm theoretical predictions that the energy spectrum is dominated by these fluctuations at ...
