Homogeneity and isotropy in a laboratory turbulent flow

open access: yes, 2013
We present a new design for a stirred tank that is forced by two parallel planar arrays of randomly actuated synthetic jets. This arrangement creates turbulence at high Reynolds number with low mean flow.

On velocity structure functions and the spherical vortex model for isotropic turbulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We investigate a stochastic model for homogeneous, isotropic turbulence based on Hill's spherical vortex. This is an extension of the method of Synge and Lin [Trans. R. Soc. Can.

Theory and Modelling of Isotropic Turbulence: From Incompressible through Increasingly Compressible Flows

open access: yesAtmosphere
Homogeneous isotropic turbulence (HIT) has been a useful theoretical concept for more than fifty years of theory, modelling, and calculations. Some exact results are revisited in incompressible HIT, with special emphasis on the 4/5 Kolmogorov law.

Correlation functions in isotropic and anisotropic turbulence: the role of the symmetry group

open access: yes, 1998
The theory of fully developed turbulence is usually considered in an idealized homogeneous and isotropic state. Real turbulent flows exhibit the effects of anisotropic forcing.

An overview of Millionschikov's quasi-normality hypothesis applied to turbulence

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 2014
In this paper, we examine the zero-fourth cumulant approximation that was applied to fluctuating velocity components of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence by M.D. Millionschikov.

Theoretical aspects of homogenous isotropic turbulence [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering, 2004
We review some recent advances on the problem of fully developed turbulence within the mathematical and physical points of view. From the mathematical perspective, we discuss a framework which has been developed for the rigorous treatment of the conventional statistical theory of turbulence and address some of the rigorous results which have been ...

Microfluidic Mixing with the Dynamic Control of Magnetic Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration and flow field visualization of magnetically actuated L‐shaped microrobots displaying cooperative vortex generation for enhanced microscale mixing. The left side shows the electromagnetic actuation setup, which enables programmable control of rotational direction and frequency.

Some Early Studies of Isotropic Turbulence: A Review

open access: yesAtmosphere
A re-examination of some early classic turbulence literature, mainly of isotropic turbulence, is given in this selective review. Some early studies, including original concepts and points, are reviewed or highlighted.

Secondary Flow near an Undulatory Surface Induced by Wall Blocking Effect

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Science and Technology, 2007
Secondary mean motions of Prandtl's second kind near an undulatory surface are explained in terms of the turbulent blocking effect and kinematic boundary conditions at the surface, and the order of magnitude is estimated. The isotropic turbulence is

On the influence of forced homogeneous-isotropic turbulence on the settling and clustering of finite-size particles [PDF]

open access: yesActa Mechanica, 2018
We investigate the motion of heavy particles with a diameter of several multiples of the Kolmogorov length scale in the presence of forced turbulence and gravity, resorting to interface-resolved direct numerical simulation based on an immersed boundary ...
