Homogenization of an ensemble of interacting resonant scatterers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We study theoretically the concept of homogenization in optics using an ensemble of randomly distributed resonant stationary atoms with density $\rho$. The ensemble is dense enough for the usual condition for homogenization, viz.

Homogeneous bands [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Mathematics, 2018
A countable band $B$ is called homogeneous if every isomorphism between finitely generated subbands extends to an automorphism of $B$. In this paper we give a complete classification of all the homogeneous bands. We prove that a homogeneous band belongs to the variety of regular bands, and has a homogeneous structure semilattice.

Bayesian Numerical Homogenization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Numerical homogenization, i.e. the finite-dimensional approximation of solution spaces of PDEs with arbitrary rough coefficients, requires the identification of accurate basis elements.

Snowbeds are more affected than other subalpine–alpine plant communities by climate change in the Swiss Alps

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2016
While the upward shift of plant species has been observed on many alpine and nival summits, the reaction of the subalpine and lower alpine plant communities to the current warming and lower snow precipitation has been little investigated so far.

Symplectic Homogenization

open access: yesJournal de l’École polytechnique — Mathématiques, 2022
Let H(q,p) be a Hamiltonian on T * T n . Under suitable assumptions on H, we show that the sequence (H k ) k≥1 defined by H k (q,p)=H(kq,p) converges in the γ-topology—defined in [Vit92]—to an integrable continuous Hamiltonian H ¯(p). This is extended to the case of non-autonomous Hamiltonians, and the more general setting in which only some of the ...

Conditions for spontaneous homogenization of the Universe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The present-day Universe appears to be homogeneous on very large scales. Yet when the casual structure of the early Universe is considered, it becomes apparent that the early Universe must have been highly inhomogeneous.

Homomorphism–homogeneous graphs [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Graph Theory, 2010
AbstractWe answer two open questions posed by Cameron and Nesetril concerning homomorphism–homogeneous graphs. In particular we show, by giving a characterization of these graphs, that extendability to monomorphism or to homomorphism leads to the same class of graphs when defining homomorphism–homogeneity.

Homogenization of high-contrast and non symmetric conductivities for non periodic columnar structures

open access: yesNetworks and Heterogeneous Media, 2013
In this paper we determine, in dimension three, the effective conductivities of non periodic and high-contrast two-phase cylindrical composites, placed in a constant magnetic field, without any assumption on the geometry of their cross sections.
