Effect of distance, area, and climate on the frequency of introduction and extinction events on islands and archipelagos

open access: yesEcosphere, 2020
Change in community similarity (e.g., biotic homogenization) is regulated by different types of introduction and extinction events. However, the spatial patterns and potential drivers of these event types have not yet been addressed to date.

Revisiting the early instrumental temperature records of Basel and Geneva

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2023
Basel and Geneva have two of the longest meteorological records in Switzerland, covering more than two and a half centuries. The respective monthly temperature series were published over 60 years ago and are part of todays main global temperature data ...

Greening of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and Its Response to Climate Variations along Elevation Gradients

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
The vegetation of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) is vital to the global climate change and ecological security of China. However, the impact of climate variation on the spatial pattern and zonal distribution of vegetation in the QTP remains unclear ...

Gliese 581g as a scaled-up version of Earth: atmospheric circulation simulations

open access: yes, 2011
We use three-dimensional simulations to study the atmospheric circulation on the first Earth-sized exoplanet discovered in the habitable zone of an M star.

Oxygen Supply of Islets of Langerhans by Photosynthetically Active Microalgae in Bioprinted Co‐Cultures Maintains Their Function in a Hypoxic Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed a bioprinted co‐culture system embedding rat pancreatic islets and Scenedesmus sp. microalgae spatially defined in close vicinity. Red light was found optimal to ensure microalgal photosynthesis while maintaining islet viability and functionality. A tailored co‐culture medium supported both cell types.

On finite-size Lyapunov exponents in multiscale systems

open access: yes, 2012
We study the effect of regime switches on finite size Lyapunov exponents (FSLEs) in determining the error growth rates and predictability of multiscale systems. We consider a dynamical system involving slow and fast regimes and switches between them. The

Discussion of “An analysis of global warming in the Alpine region based on nonlinear nonstationary time series models” by F. Battaglia and M. K. Protopapas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The annual temperatures recorded for the last two centuries in fifteen european stations around the Alps are analyzed. They show a global warming whose growth rate is not however constant in time. An analysis based on linear Arima models does not provide

Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalysts for Acidic‐Media CO2 Electrolyzers

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Acidic‐media CO2 electroreduction (CO2R) could decarbonize chemical production, despite relying on rare‐earth elements for anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Transferring the learnings from mature sister technologies (water electrolysis) could accelerate technological development.

Climate change and rising energy costs: a threat but also an opportunity for a healthier future? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Health problems caused by overconsumption, growing inequalities and diminished well-being are issues that have been attributed to the prioritization of economic growth as the central purpose of society.
