SUMMARY To investigate a dermatologie condition observed clinically, 10 Beagle bitches were infected percutaneously with 50 3rd-stage larvae of Ancylostoma caninum. Dermatitis resulted that was characterized by pruritus, erythema, and papules from which penetration tracts could be traced histologically into the epidermis.

Twenty-one gastric biopsies were performed on 10 patients with hookworm disease. Seven of the patients had diffuse gastric lesions, 2, gastritis, and 5, atrophic gastritis. Serial biopsy studies after correction of the anemia and suppression of the worm burden revealed no significant reversal of the gastric lesions.

1975Anaemia in hookworm infestation due to iron deficiency has been firmly established [1,2]. Blood loss in these patients [3–8] is associated quantitatively with hookworm load. Protein loss in patients with severe hookworm infestation may lower the total serum protein [6, 9].
