Hookworm Dermatitis

SUMMARY To investigate a dermatologie condition observed clinically, 10 Beagle bitches were infected percutaneously with 50 3rd-stage larvae of Ancylostoma caninum. Dermatitis resulted that was characterized by pruritus, erythema, and papules from which penetration tracts could be traced histologically into the epidermis.

Anaemia in hookworm infestation due to iron deficiency has been firmly established [1,2]. Blood loss in these patients [3–8] is associated quantitatively with hookworm load. Protein loss in patients with severe hookworm infestation may lower the total serum protein [6, 9].
