Hydrobiologia, 1995Hoplias malabaricus behaves as a zoophagous and euryphagic species with a strong tendency to eat fish during its entire life. Fish begin to constitute its main food at approximately 200 mm standard length. Insects are important for fish smaller than 50 mm. Crustaceans are of lesser importance for both size groups.

The X1X2Y sex chromosome system in the fish Hoplias malabaricus. II. Meiotic analyses
Chromosome Research, 1998The neotropical fish Hoplias malabaricus shows diversified cytotypes and may represent a group of distinct species. One of these cytotypes is characterized by 2n = 40 and 2n = 39 chromosomes in females and males, respectively, with a multiple sex chromosome system of the X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y type.

Parasitology Research, 1996Henneguya malabarica sp. nov. is described from the Amazonian teleost fish Hoplias malabaricus Boch, 1794, collected from the estuarine region of the Amazon river near Belém, Brazil. Plasmodia were represented by several vegetative nuclei, generative cells, and sporogony stages contained in cyst-like plasmodia.
