Pavement cell ultrastructural differences on Hoplias malabaricus, gill epithelia
Journal of Fish Biology, 1996Pavement cells from the leading and trailing edges of the gill filament of Hoplias malabaricus, exhibit a complex system of microridges, a long tight junction and a large number of desmosomes. Pavement cells from the secondary lamellae are smooth surfaced with clearly defined cell boundaries by a circular microridge.

Responses of the teleost Hoplias malabaricus to hypoxia
Environmental Biology of Fishes, 1984Oxygen uptake (VO2) during graded hypoxia, rate of hypoxia acclimation, breathing frequency (fR), breath volume (VS, R) and gill ventilation (VG) were measured in Hoplias malabaricus. Normoxia and hypoxia acclimated fish had similar and constant VO2 and VG in a range of water PO2 from 150 to 25 mmHg.

New Insights into the Biogeographic and Karyotypic Evolution of Hoplias Malabaricus
Zebrafish, 2014Hoplias malabaricus is a species widely distributed throughout Brazil. Cytogenetic studies indicate the occurrence of extensive chromosomal rearrangements in population differentiation and speciation of the group that demonstrated an independent origin of sex chromosome systems.

The multiple soluble malate dehydrogenase of Hoplias malabaricus(Erythrinidae, Characiformes)
Experimental Biology Online, 1997To explain the six-banded pattern obtained upon electrophoresis of the soluble form of malate dehydrogenase (sMDH, EC 1.1.1.37) from the characiform Hoplias malabaricus, a recent locus duplication of its A isoform (sMDH-A*), in addition to its sMDH-B* isoform, was proposed.

Toxic effects of DDT and methyl mercury on the hepatocytes from Hoplias malabaricus
Toxicology in Vitro, 2008Here, we examined the impact of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and monomethyl mercury (MeHg) on the redox milieu and survival of hepatocytes from Hoplias malabaricus (traíra). After isolation and attachment of cells, we established one control and four treatments: DDT (50nM of DDT), MeHg I (0.25microM of MeHg), MeHg II (2.5microM of MeHg) and ...

Genotoxic evaluation of different doses of inorganic lead (PbII) in Hoplias malabaricus
Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 2008Different genetic biomarkers have been used to evaluate the pollution effects of mutagenic agents such as metals and also a great variety of chemicals delivered on the environment by human activities. This way, the aim of the present report was to evaluate the effects of inorganic lead in fishes through the frequency of piscine micronuclei and nuclear ...

Feeding of Hoplias malabaricus in the wetlands of Dulce river (Córdoba, Argentina)
Hydrobiologia, 1995Hoplias malabaricus behaves as a zoophagous and euryphagic species with a strong tendency to eat fish during its entire life. Fish begin to constitute its main food at approximately 200 mm standard length. Insects are important for fish smaller than 50 mm. Crustaceans are of lesser importance for both size groups.
