Early ontogeny and swimming behavior of larvae of the neotropical fish Prochilodus costatus Valenciennes 1850 and Prochilodus argenteus Spix & Agassiz 1829 (Characiformes: Prochilodontidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Early development of fish larvae is a highly dynamic process and its study may provide important information about ontogenetic development, bioenergetic growth, behaviour, taxonomic characteristics for identification in natural environments ...

Length-weight relationship of Hoplias aff. malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) in a subtropical wetland [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2016
Hoplias aff. malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) is a predatory fish from the Erythrinidae family, widely distributed, occurring in river basins of South America (Oyakawa and Mattox, 2009). This species has a vital role in ecosystems as top predator besides having an important economic value for fisheries (Chaves et al., 2009).

Oxygen consumption from air and water, ammonia and urea‐N excretion, and Na+ fluxes during progressive aquatic hypoxia in Amazonian armoured catfish Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps and Pterygoplichthys pardalis

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 108, Issue 3, Page 867-880, March 2026.
Abstract The Amazonian loricariid fish Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps, from the Rio Negro, and Pterygoplichthys pardalis, from the Rio Solimões, are facultative air‐breathers that can use the stomach as an air‐breathing organ. Measurement of oxygen uptake under progressive aquatic hypoxia revealed a relatively high hypoxia resistance of both species.

A new species of the genus Hoplias (Characiformes, Erythrinidae), a tararira from the lower Paraná River, in Misiones, Argentina

open access: yesActa Zoológica Lilloana, 2015
We describe Hoplias mbigua , a new species of the genus from the lower Paraná, in Misiones, with tooth-bearing plates on dorsal surface of basihyal and basibranchi- als and medial margins of contralateral dentaries converging towards the mandibular ...

Nitrogen excretion and oxygen consumption under severe hypoxia in siluriform fishes from the Amazon

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 108, Issue 3, Page 881-893, March 2026.
Abstract Siluriform fishes collected from the Rio Negro and Rio Solimões proved to be highly resistant to aquatic hypoxia. In all four species analysed in this study, aquatic oxygen consumption significantly decreased from normoxic levels at water PO2 values near 1 kPa. Air‐breathing activity was observed only in Sturisoma sp. (Rio Negro).

Isoform expression in the multiple soluble malate dehydrogenase of Hoplias malabaricus (Erythrinidae, Characiformes)

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
Kinetic properties and thermal stabilities of Hoplias malabaricus liver and skeletal muscle unfractionated malate dehydrogenase (MDH, EC 1.1.1.37) and its isolated isoforms were analyzed to further study the possible sMDH-A* locus duplication evolved ...

Ictiofauna do Rio Jurubatuba, Santos, São Paulo: um refúgio de diversidade em terras impactadas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Ichthyofaunistic surveys in the Atlantic Rainforest have been published in relatively few works, in spite of the major biological importance of this once vast biome which is rapidly vanishing due to disordered human population growth and natural ...

Genotoxic evaluation of different doses of methylmercury (CH3Hg+) in Hoplias malabaricus

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2012
Abstract The survey of the effects of toxic metals and its organic compounds are of critical importance because these compounds tend to accumulate in aquatic environments. In the present work, the genotoxic potential of methylmercury, an organomercurial compound with high toxicity and present in large amounts in fish of the Amazon due to the mining ...
