SOCIETAL CHALLENGES AT HORIZON 2020

open access: yesRadar: tecnologia, produção e comércio exterior, 2019
This note aims to contribute to the debate about the relationship between technology, innovation and societal challenges (SCs). It analyzes how research and innovation (R&I) is related to societal needs in the European Community. In order to do so, this note reviews the SCs, pillar 3 of Horizon 2020 (H2020), the largest European R&I support ...

A Fully Human Engineered Bone Niche With Endogenous Osteoclastogenesis Reveals Osteoclast‐Dependent Osteomimicry in Prostate Cancer Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A human 3D bone niche integrating osteoblasts and osteoclasts enables co‐culture with prostate cancer cell lines and patient‐derived organoids. The engineered niche (i) models aspects of reciprocal phenotypic regulation between osteoblasts and cancer cells, (ii) captures osteoclast‐enhanced osteomimicry in tumor cells, and (iii) establishes a ...

Horizon 2020 IMPTOX perspective [PDF]

open access: yes3rd International UNIFood Conference, Book of Abstracts, 28th-29th June 2024, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Serbia
Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are pervasive environmental pollutants found in marine water, freshwater, agroecosystems, atmosphere, food, drinking water, and biota. Despite their widespread presence, comprehensive data on MNPs prevalence and impact remain limited due to analytical challenges.

Functional Blood‐Brain Barrier Crossing by Biomimetic M13 Phage Vectors for Targeted Neuronal Delivery

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the M13 bacteriophage as a biomimetic nanovector capable of crossing in vitro models of the blood–brain barrier. By exploiting peculiar transcellular pathways, M13 avoids lysosomal degradation and preserves its structural integrity and functionality.

Neutrophil‐Mimetic MRI Enables Ultra‐Early Detection of Vascular Inflammation After Stroke

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, we developed neutrophil‐mimetic MRI probes that detect ultra‐early neuroinflammation following ischemic stroke by targeting E‐selectin. Within seconds of their injection, these microparticles mimic initial leukocyte adhesion to the activated cerebral endothelium.
