Horizontal-Well Pressure Analysis [PDF]

open access: possibleSPE Formation Evaluation, 1987
SummaryThis paper presents an analysis of the pressure-transient behavior of a horizontal well or a drainhole. The performances of horizontal wells and fully penetrating vertical fractures are compared. Dimensionless wellbore pressures are computed for two classic boundary conditions: infinite conductivity and uniform flux.

Productivity of a Horizontal Well

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 1988
Abstract Two appendices describe the mathematical and algebraic details that led to the formulas provided in the text of this paper. Appendix A presents the general solution, and briefly describes the techniques for deriving simple, closed form expressions for single, double, and triple sums of infinite series. Appendix B describes these

An Analysis of Horizontally Fractured Horizontal Wells

Proceedings of SPE Rocky Mountain Regional Meeting, 1992
ABSTRACT Horizontal wells with lengths up to 8,000 ft are capturing an ever-increasing share of all wells drilled. However, the performance of many of these wells is significantly less than what is predicted by published well performance models.

Pseudo-Horizontal Well: Alternative to Horizontal and Vertical Wells

Proceedings of International Conference on Horizontal Well Technology, 1996
Abstract Horizontal wells are getting more and more widely used in oil and gas fields development due to plenty of its merits. However, there are examples when horizontal well drilling did not justify hopes. It is shown in this paper, that layered and anisotropic structure of the reservoir may lead to decrease of initial oil flow rates ...

Performance Evaluation of Horizontal Wells

SPE Asia Pacific Conference on Integrated Modelling for Asset Management, 1998
Abstract Horizontal wells have been drilled in many oil and gas reservoirs. Measuring or calculating the productivity of horizontal wells has been difficult because of their long length in the formation compared with vertical wells and because of the inadequacy of measurements during drilling and production. In this

Productivity of Horizontal Wells

Proceedings of Low Permeability Reservoirs Symposium, 1991
ABSTRACT Many horizontal wells are being drilled all over the world. One of the objectives is to increase the well productivity, compared to vertical wells. This increase in productivity occurs in a naturally fractured reservoir because many fissures are intercepted by the horizontal well.

Horizontal Well IPR Calculations

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 1996
Abstract This paper presents the calculation of near-wellbore skin and non-Darcy flow coefficient for horizontal wells based on whether the well is drilled in an underbalanced or overbalanced condition, whether the well is completed openhole, with a slotted liner, or cased, and on the number of shots per foot and ...

Pressure Transient Analysis for Horizontal Well and Multi-Branched Horizontal Wells

Proceedings of International Conference on Horizontal Well Technology, 1996
Abstract Transient pressure for cases of a horizontal wellbore axis with any angle inclined to a fault or a constant pressure supply boundary in anisotropic formations were studied. This axis parallel to or perpendicular to a fault is only its a simple special case.

Horizontal Well Sand Cleanouts

SPE International Heavy Oil Symposium, 1995
Abstract This paper discusses sand problems occurring in Horizontal Wells located in NE Alberta and NW Saskatchewan, Western Canada. These wells are completed in the heavy oil sands at 450–750 m TVD. Typical completions utilize 0.625 mm (0.025 in.) slots in liners 500m to 1200m long. The average length is approximately 900m.

Horizontal Wells – Are They Worth the Cost?

PetroVietnam, 1995
ABSTRACT Horizontal and extended-reach wells are making an important contribution to world's oil production. Well over five thousands horizontal wells and drainholes have been drilled, with approximately fifteen hundreds such wells in Canada.
