The construction and history of the calibration horn antenna, a large standard-gain horn at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Green Bank, West Virginia, are discussed. Construction of the horn began in 1958. Its purpose was to make absolute measurements by observing a strong source directly with a standard-gain horn antenna.

Photonic crystal horn and array antennas
Physical Review E, 2003We introduce a defect-based horn antenna in a two-dimensional photonic crystal. Our numerical simulations demonstrate the efficient, highly directional nature of the antenna. It has a large operating bandwidth, low loss, and an operating frequency that is scalable to various regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Formulas are derived for the E- and H-plane radiation patterns of antennas fed by horns as functions of illumination taper. The case of a single lens or reflector antenna fed by two contiguous horns stacked in either one of the principal planes is then investigated.

In this work the basic theory of circular corrugated horn antennas is presented, using easy concepts with simple mathematics. The aim is to give the reader an understanding of the fundamental electromagnetic properties of these devices and to provide a set of quantitative design tools for the electromagnetic engineer.
