Abstract Glaciomarine fjords dominate the coastal margin of the West Antarctic Peninsula. Studies in similar habitats in the Arctic have shown that benthic biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in inner and middle fjord basins are reduced by turbidity and sedimentation disturbance caused by climate warming–enhanced glacial melting.

First detrital zircon provenance study of the Billefjorden Group on Bjørnøya, Svalbard. The East Greenland Caledonides formed a long‐lived source terrain in northeast Greenland. Syn‐sedimentary faulting, drainage shifts and changing fluvial styles have little influence on detrital zircon age spectrum.

Conditions influencing incoming global solar radiation in Hornsund (Spitsbergen) in spring 2015
This article analyses the conditions affecting the incoming global solar radiation in Hornsund (Spitsbergen) in spring of 2015. Incoming solar radiation turned out to be average for the season under analysis, as compared with longer-term data.

Cluster analysis of the impact of air back-trajectories on aerosol optical properties at Hornsund, Spitsbergen [PDF]
In this paper, spectra of aerosol optical thickness from the AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork) station at Hornsund in the southern part of Spitsbergen were employed to study the impact of air mass history on aerosol optical thickness for wavelength λ=500

Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Alternative hypotheses have been proposed regarding how the hormone corticosterone (CORT) mediates energy expenditure during reproduction. Elevated baseline CORT (CORTb) could support daily energy expenditure (DEE), promoting reproductive effort or downregulate costly ...

Abstract Kongsfjorden, an Arctic fjord in Svalbard, is largely influenced by the West Spitsbergen Current (WSC), transporting warm and salty Atlantic Water (AW) into the Arctic region. Despite the geostrophic control preventing AW from entering the fjord in winter, AW intrusions occasionally occur during energetic local wind events in this season ...

Abstract Ultra‐low frequency (ULF) waves transfer energy and momentum into the ionosphere‐thermosphere system. To quantify this energy, this paper first presents a new method to quantitatively detect ULF waves in Incoherent Scatter Radar (ISR) data based on 2D fast‐Fourier transforms and subsequent reconstruction of the wave.

Abstract Permafrost warming has been observed all around the Arctic, however, variations in temperature trends and their drivers remain poorly understood. We present a comprehensive analysis of climatic changes spanning 25 years (1998–2023) at Bayelva (78.92094°N, 11.83333°E) on Spitzbergen, Svalbard. The quality controlled hourly data set includes air
