Equidae are susceptible to infection by three viruses of the family Herpetoviridae. Equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1), an alphaherpesvirus which exists as two subtypes, is responsible for respiratory disease of young animals as well as for sporadic and epizootic abortigenic or neurologic disease.
