Flexing bed stock: A hospital capacity management case study
2014 36th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2014As hospitals struggle to meet rising demand for their services, efficient capacity management is critical to the success of their efforts. A popular strategy employed by hospitals to meet the variability in demand for their services is to 'flex' their capacity, i.e. to vary the number of available staffed beds to suit demand on a regular basis.

Spill Over Effects of Inpatient Bed Capacity on Accident and Emergency Performance in England.
Health Policy, 2020The English National Health Service (NHS) has failed to meet the four-hour waiting time target to admit, transfer or discharge 95 per cent of patients attending Accident and Emergency Departments (A&E) since 2013.

A systems approach for hospital inpatient bed capacity planning
2009 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, 2009Evaluating best strategies across the organization has been a major challenge for healthcare decision makers. The complex nature of patient flow and the unpredictability involved makes discrete event simulation an ideal tool for evaluating strategic decisions in hospital inpatient capacity planning.

Extending floating catchment area methods to estimate future hospital bed capacity requirements
Spatial and Spatio-temporal Epidemiology, 2022A new hospital in north-west Sydney, Australia is to start construction in the year 2023. However, the number of emergency department beds/treatment spaces (EDBs) that it will contain is yet to be determined, as this region is expected to have relatively high population growth from year 2021 to year 2036.

Tapping into hidden hospital bed capacity.
Healthcare financial management : journal of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, 2003Using existing resources more efficiently can help hospitals relieve their bed-capacity problems cost-effectively. Hospitals need to: Measure performance in key areas that affect patient flow and capacity Identify the drivers of capacity constraints and key opportunities for performance improvement Understand how patients flow through the hospital to ...

The Dwindling Supply Of Empty Beds: Implications For Hospital Surge Capacity
Health Affairs, 2008The threat of mass-casualty disasters raises concern about the adequacy of hospitals' surge capacity. This paper measures surge capacity as the number of empty staffed beds per capita at the county level and compares it to a disaster-planning benchmark released by the federal government. The percentage of the U.S.

[Efficient use of the hospital bed capacity].
Voenno-meditsinskii zhurnal, 2004The development of rather precise methods for determining the efficiency of health service activity as well as the measures directed to maintain and to strengthen the population health is extremely difficult but very important task. However till now the problems of using the medical resources more effectively, the choice of well-founded criteria and ...

Stochastic Demand for Hospitals and Optimizing "Excess" Bed Capacity
Journal of Regulatory Economics, 1998This paper addresses the issue of hospital bed capacity by considering the stochastic demand for United States hospitals. An equilibrium condition for the optimal number of "excess" beds is derived and applied using a cost function estimated with a panel data model for the period 1987-1992.

Optimal prices and costs for hospitals with excess bed capacity
Applied Economics, 2000This paper analyses theoretically and empirically issues in optimal pricing with excess hospital capacity, and then applies the analysis to the issue as to whether Medicare and Medicaid payments cover the marginal costs of treating patients of each type.
