Matching of police and hospital road crash casualty records – a data-linkage study in Malaysia

open access: yesInternational Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion, 2018
Underreporting of road crashes hampers the development of appropriate road safety countermeasures in many countries. In this study, police and hospital records from road crash casualties in the Melaka Tengah district in Malaysia from 2014 were collected ...

Circulating tumor cells in metastatic breast cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors – a biomarker analysis of the ALICE and ICON trials

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative biomarker analysis, we assessed serial sampling of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with CellSearch in two randomized trials testing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in metastatic breast cancer. Our data demonstrate a prognostic potential of CTCs, most apparent 4 weeks into ICI therapy.

Predicting Acute Kidney Injury at Hospital Re-entry Using High-dimensional Electronic Health Record Data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), a sudden decline in kidney function, is associated with increased mortality, morbidity, length of stay, and hospital cost. Since AKI is sometimes preventable, there is great interest in prediction. Most existing studies consider all patients and therefore restrict to features available in the first hours of hospitalization ...

Cellular liquid biopsy provides unique chances for disease monitoring, preclinical model generation and therapy adjustment in rare salivary gland cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We quantified and cultured circulating tumor cells (CTCs) of 62 patients with various cancer types and generated CTC‐derived tumoroid models from two salivary gland cancer patients. Cellular liquid biopsy‐derived information enabled molecular genetic assessment of systemic disease heterogeneity and functional testing for therapy selection in both ...

What can we learn about SARS-CoV-2 prevalence from testing and hospital data? [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Measuring the prevalence of active SARS-CoV-2 infections in the general population is difficult because tests are conducted on a small and non-random segment of the population. However, people admitted to the hospital for non-COVID reasons are tested at very high rates, even though they do not appear to be at elevated risk of infection.

Using natural language processing and structured medical data to phenotype patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
To identify patients who are hospitalized because of COVID-19 as opposed to those who were admitted for other indications, we compared the performance of different computable phenotype definitions for COVID-19 hospitalizations that use different types of data from the electronic health records (EHR), including structured EHR data elements, provider ...

Integrative analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and exosomes from small‐cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients: a comprehensive approach

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study simultaneously investigated circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and exosomes from small‐cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients. The elevated expression of JUNB and CXCR4 in CTCs was a poor prognostic factor for SCLC patients, whereas exosomal overexpression of these biomarkers revealed a high discrimination ability of patients from healthy individuals,
