Formation and evolution of the interfacial structure in Al/steel compound castings during solidification and heat treatment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
In this work, Al7SiMg/steel compound castings were produced through a low-pressure die casting process. All steel inserts were galvanized, where half of them were flux-coated to further improve the wettability and remove interfacial oxide layers during ...

Offshore Weathering Campaign on a North Sea Wind Farm Part One: Corrosivity Categories

open access: yesMaterials and Corrosion, Volume 76, Issue 6, Page 812-821, June 2025.
To optimize the corrosion protection conditions, the corrosiveness of offshore wind turbines must be determined in several necessary areas of the structure. Therefore detailed investigations were done at real structures. ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to investigate the corrosion behavior of materials and coatings in offshore environments, with a ...

Comparison of LEIS, SIMS, and AR‐XPS as Methods for Surface Characterization of Passivated Zn–Al–Mg Steel

open access: yesMaterials and Corrosion, Volume 76, Issue 5, Page 640-649, May 2025.
This research compares low‐energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEIS), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and angle‐resolved X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AR‐XPS) for depth profiling of Zn–Al–Mg coatings treated in alkaline and acidic solutions.

Toward an Internet of Things Circular Economy Using Printed Circuits on Reusable Steel Substrates

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, Volume 11, Issue 5, April 2025.
Herein, the functionalization of steel over large areas with low‐cost insulative intermediate layers as Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) is presented, enabling an electronics circular economy. The environmental benefits of the approach are evidenced by Life Cycle Assessments, demonstrating an 85% reduction in Global Warming when compared to FR‐4‐based ...

Effect of Surface Pretreatments on the Formation of Zr‐Based Conversion Layers on Zn–Al–Mg Alloy‐Coated Steel

open access: yesMaterials and Corrosion, Volume 76, Issue 4, Page 510-518, April 2025.
This paper investigates Zr‐based conversion coatings on Zn–Mg–Al alloy‐coated steel. Using XPS and LEIS analyses, the study examines Zr‐layer formation after alkaline and acidic pretreatments. Results highlight the effectiveness of strong alkaline pretreatment in achieving a defect‐free, double‐layered Zr‐conversion coating.

Influence of hot dip galvanizing on fatigue behavior of welded steel joints [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
This thesis investigates the effect of hot dip galvanizing (HDG) on fatigue strength of fillet welded S355 structural steels. HDG is a surface treatment that allows protecting components from corrosion, but its effect on the fatigue strength of the ...

Influence of Surface Preparation on the Durability of Repair Coatings for Prepainted Galvanised Steel

open access: yesMaterials and Corrosion, Volume 76, Issue 4, Page 533-541, April 2025.
This work provides information on the performance of repair coatings for damaged prepainted galvanised steel used for building applications. The results highlighted the need for careful surface preparation on the damaged and corroded surface to eliminate surface salts and residues before the application of the repair coat.
