Melanin's Role in Balancing Mechanical Strength and Reproductive Output in Environmentally Stressed Fungal Spores

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Melanin content directly controls fungal spore mechanical properties, with pigmented spores achieving rupture forces two orders of magnitude higher than hyaline spores. Environmental stress drives this quantity‐quality tradeoff; stressed species invest energy in melanin‐reinforced, mechanically superior thick‐walled, super‐hydrophobic spores, while ...

Automated Visual Inspection of Surface Defects on Hot-Rolled Plate

open access: yes, 2011
This paper is concerned with the problem of automatic inspection of hot-rolled plate surface using machine vision. An automated visual inspection (AVI) system has been developed to take images of external hot-rolled plate surfaces and the detailed ...

Upcycling Keratin‐Based Textile Waste Into High‐Performance Hybrid Fibers Via Tuning the Interfacial Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Keratin recovered from animal‐hair textile waste is fractionated and blended with cellulose to produce continuously spun hybrid fibers. Selecting the high‐molecular‐weight keratin fraction enables 30 wt.% keratin incorporation while maintaining high strength in dry and wet states.

Biodegradable 3D‐Printable and Coatable Antifouling Composites for Marine Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Marine biofouling damages submerged surfaces and raises greenhouse gas emissions. Biodegradable antifouling biocomposites were developed by hot‐mixing beeswax, Tween 80, and calcium stearate or stearic acid. Adjusting the component ratio enables processing via hot‐pressing, 3D‐printing, or dip‐coating.

Tantalum–Palladium Ultrathin Resistance Hydrogen Sensor

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoconfined Ta‐alloy thin films enable fast, reversible hydrogen sensing by suppressing unwanted phase transitions. A Ta0.88${\rm Ta}_{0.88}$Pd0.12${\rm Pd}_{0.12}$ sensing layer delivers hysteresis‐free detection from ppb to 100% H2${\rm H}_2$ at room temperature.

Unbalance Errors in Guarded Hot Plate Measurements

open access: yes, 2009
The errors in thermal conductivity measurement in three different designs of guarded hot plate caused by small temperature differences (unbalances) between test area and guard ring are described. The dependence of these errors upon: (a) the magnitude and direction of the unbalance, (b) the size anddesign of heater plate, (c) the conductivity and ...

Ultra‐Thin Tow‐Based Discontinuous Composites—Material Overview and Aspirations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Tow‐based discontinuous composites made from ultra‐thin tapes offer outstanding in‐plane mechanical properties. This material, inspired by Nacre, has high volume fraction of tapes exceeding 90 % and allows for quasi‐isotropic material plates less than 100 micrometer in thickness.
