Powder Metallurgy Processing by Hot Isostatic Pressing

2015
Abstract This article discusses metal powder processing via hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and HIP cladding when metal powders are being employed in the cladding process. It traces the history of the process and details the equipment, pressing cycle, and densification mechanisms for HIP.

Processing of Multilayered Si3N4-TiN Hot-Pressed Ceramic Composites

1998
The main strategy in manufacturing more reliable ceramics is usually associated with the design of ceramic composites that provide different mechanisms of fracture energy absorption and/or dissipation. In addition, many other properties can be modified by optimal structural design of composites.

Hot Isostatic Pressing: An Intelligent Processing of Materials Demonstration

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1992
Abstract Intelligent processing of materials (IPM) combines process modeling, in-situ sensing, and feedback control to improve the efficiency and quality of processing advanced materials such as ϒ-TiAl via powder metallurgy. The IPM concept, as applied to hot isostatic pressing (HIP), exploits recent advances in off-line finite element modeling (FEM),

Crack Deflection Process for Hot‐Pressed Whisker‐Reinforced Ceramic Composites

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1989
A crack deflection model for two‐dimensional randomly arranged rods has been derived by making an appropriate modification to the model by Faber and Evans. This model predicts more effective toughening in certain directions than that for three‐dimensional randomly arranged rods.

Finite element modeling of the hot isostatic pressing process

22nd Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference, 1981
In the hot isostatic pressing (HIP) process a container, with the approximate shape of the component to be produced, is filled with a metal powder, evacuated, and then subjected to high temperatures and pressures. As a result, the powder deforms to fill the void space and upon cooling a solid part results.

Surface modification of carbides by hot isostatic pressing nitridation processing

Solid State Ionics, 1997
A new and effective process, surface nitridation by hot isostatic pressing (HIP), has been successfully developed to enhance the mechanical properties of some carbide and carbide-containing ceramics. Mechanical properties of SiC monolithic ceramics and some SiC-containing composites before and after HIP nitridation are compared and discussed.
