A И-Shaped Curve of Hot Tearing Susceptibility in Magsimal®-59-Based Alloys
Solid State Phenomena, 2022The hot tearing susceptibility of Al-6Mg-xSi (x = 0-6.0 wt.%) alloys was studied using constrained rod casting. Addition of Si content resulted in double ternary eutectic reactions and then changed the freezing range and eutectic liquid fraction greatly, which made the hot tearing susceptibility show a И-curve with the increasing of Si content.

A Novel Approach to Assessing the Hot Tearing Susceptibility of Aluminium Alloys
Materials Science Forum, 2000Previous work has shown that hot tearing is the result of differential contraction between the solid and liquid phases during the solidification of the ingot. Most of these studies have been on hot tearing problems in the bulk metal. However, it remains to be demonstrated how the shell region affects the occurrence of hot tearing during solidification ...

International Journal of Cast Metals Research, 2014
In this work, a new criterion for estimating hot tear susceptibility called overall hot tearing susceptibility (OHTS) is proposed to determine hot tearing tendency in the mould region during continuous casting. The OHTS criterion takes into account the cooling rate, brittle temperature range, strain rate and thickness of the brittle region.

Estimation of Susceptibility to Hot Tearing in Solidifying Casting
2012Hot tearing, also called hot cracking, is a serious defect that appears during the solidification of an alloy. Due to the low recurrence of the phenomena occurring during alloy solidification, such as the evolution of grained structure or stress redistributions, the casting’s susceptibility to hot tearing can be estimated only in an approximate way ...

A New Criterion for Prediction of Hot Tearing Susceptibility of Cast Alloys
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2014A new criterion for prediction of hot tearing susceptibility of cast alloys is suggested which takes into account the effects of both important mechanical and metallurgical factors and is believed to be less sensitive to the presence of volume defects such as bifilms and inclusions. The criterion was validated by studying the hot tearing tendency of Al-

Effect of Al Content on Hot-Tearing Susceptibility of Mg-10Zn-xAl Alloys
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2020The hot-tearing susceptibility of Mg-10Zn-xAl (x = 0, 2, 5, and 7) alloys was studied using constrained rod casting installed with a load cell, thermocouple, and data-management system. Addition of Al content reduced the freezing range and increased the liquid fraction at the end of the primary stage of solidification, during the vulnerable period of ...

Hot Tear Susceptibility of Al-Mg-Si-Fe Alloys with Varying Iron Contents
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2012Hot tear susceptibility in cast Al-0.52Si-0.34Mg-xFe 6060 aluminum alloys was investigated using a hot tearing test apparatus to simulate hot tearing in DC casting. The test apparatus has two cast bars, one that is used to measure the load response and one which is fixed at both ends to restrain thermal contraction so that hot tearing can be observed ...

Influence of yttrium additions on the hot tearing susceptibility of magnesium–zinc alloys
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2010Abstract The influence of Y additions on the hot tearing behaviour of Mg–Zn alloys was investigated in this study. In permanent mould castings and in direct chill cast ingots, alloying of a few wt.% Y results in a significant reduction of hot tearing susceptibility.

Study on Solidification Behavior and Hot Tearing Susceptibility of Mg–2xY–xNi ALLOYS
International Journal of Metalcasting, 2020Mg–2xY–xTM(Zn,Cu,Ni) alloys reinforced with LPSO have outstanding mechanical properties, but there is less research on Mg–2xY–xNi hot tearing sensitivity. Therefore, based on Clyne Davies Model and Newton Baseline Method, the hot tearing tendency of Mg–2xY–xNi alloys with x = 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 wt% was quantified, and the tendency was further ...

Improvement of yttrium on the hot tearing susceptibility of 6TiB2/Al-5Cu composite
Journal of Rare Earths, 2015Abstract To improve the severe hot tearing susceptibility of TiB 2 reinforced Al-5Cu matrix composites, the present research investigated the influence of Y on the hot tearing susceptibility of 6TiB 2 /Al-5Cu composite. For the composite added with Y, the solidification temperature range was shortened, which was caused by the novel τ 1 -Al 8 Cu 4 Y ...
